Part One Illinois manufacturing and recycling
Illinois plastics manufacturers generate recoverable material when they start production lines, change colors or resin grades, trim film and sheet, or reject parts that do not meet customer specifications.ThatmaterialcanincludePPrunners,HDPEcutoffs,LDPEfilmrolls,ABShousings, engineering plastic regrind and solid extrusion purges. Its next destination depends on polymer identity, cleanliness, processing history and the requirements of the next product.

Recyclers prepare discarded material for reuse. Compounders formulate materials to meet performance requirements. Some companies combine several of these activities.
That distinction matters when searching for industrial plastic recycling in Illinois. A resin distributor’s Illinois office is not evidence of an injection molding plant at that address. A manufacturer’sheadquartersdoesnotidentifyeveryproductionlocation.Arecycler’sprocessing volume does not reveal how much scrap Illinois factories generate.

Their distributionactivitiesshouldbedistinguishedfromtheconversionofpelletsintofinishedparts.M.Hollandalso markets recycled materials, while Advanced Plastics describes a portfolio including POM, PC, ABS,nylon, PBT, PS and TPE. A distributor’s product range does not establish which grades a particularIllinois factory buys. [7-9]
Two location checks prevent errors in an Illinois industry article. Dinesol Plastics’ own history places its operations in Niles, Ohio. It should therefore be discussed as an Ohio manufacturer.
MacLean-Fogg lists its headquarters in Mundelein, but its Plastic Solutions facilities are listed in Menomonee Falls and Whitewater, Wisconsin. Those plastics operations should not be relocated to Illinois merely because the parent company has an Illinois headquarters. [12,13]

How much plastic scrap do Illinois factories generate
There is no defensible single monthly quantity that can be assigned to an Illinois plastics factory basedonlyonitsemployeecount, websiteornumberofproducts.Throughput, productweight, shifts, tool design, startup frequency, quality requirements and internal reuse all affect the result.
AU.S.EPAresearchreportexplainsthatinformationabouttheend-of-lifemanagementof
post-industrial plastics is often unavailable publicly because material is managed within companies. This is a reason to obtain production and shipment records before making factory-level volume claims. [18]
Hoffer Plastics provides a disclosed example, detailed in its company profile below. A reported recoveredquantitymustbedistinguishedfromthematerialafactorycanofferforexternalsale.[3]

For these examples, gross scrap equals the assumed production throughput multiplied by the assumed scrap share. A plant must define its measurement basis consistently and avoid counting repeatedly recirculated material as new input each time.
The externally available quantity is a separate calculation. If the second hypothetical plant generates 20,000 pounds, reuses 12,000 pounds internally and sets aside 1,000 pounds that

What recycling levels do Illinois plastics factories achieve
Ausefulanswerneedsadefinedmetric.Fourdifferentmeasurementsareoftenconfused.
Thefirstisthegrossproductionscraprate:materialthatfailstobecomeacceptableproductonthe measuredpass, dividedbythedefinedproductioninput.Thesecondisinternalmaterialreuse:how much generated scrap returns to an approved process. The third is external recycling: how much material is demonstrably processed outside the factory. The fourth is recycled content: how much recovered material is incorporated into the products being manufactured.
Aplantcanrecycleahighshareofitsscrapwhileusingmostlyvirginresin.Anothercanpurchase recycled resin while still losing some of its own scrap to disposal. These measurements answer different questions and should be presented separately.
TheHofferprofileillustrateswhyalandfill-diversionstatementneedsitsoriginalscope.Landfill avoidance,internalreuseandrecyclingaredifferentmeasures,andthereportingdenominator needs to be stated. [3]
The U.S. EPA’s frequently cited 8.7 percent plastics recycling figure refers to U.S. municipal solid wastein2018.ItisnotacurrentIllinoisfactoryrecyclingrate.Applyingittocleanproductiontrim would mix different populations and reporting periods. [19]
Illinois EPA’s statewide recycling needs assessment concerns municipal material flows and handling.Suchworkprovidesusefulcontext, butdoesnotreplaceproductionrecordsand downstream processing evidence for an individual factory. [20]
Foracredibleindustrialprogram, reportthematerial, reportingperiodanddenominator.Separate collection for recycling from the quantity actually recovered after sorting and processing. Keep energy recovery and disposal in distinct categories.
DoIllinoisplasticsmanufacturersuseprimeresin
Yes. Illinois manufacturing can use virgin resin, recycled resin and approved combinations. AGS Technologyexplicitlydescribesmoldingwithbothvirginandrecycledmaterials.Thatconfirmsthe coexistence of these routes, rather than a single statewide formula. [5]
In commercial trading, “prime resin” generally describes first-quality resin supplied to the original manufacturer’s specification. Virgin resin describes material that has not previously been used and recycled. Buyers should obtain the actual grade and product documentation rather than treating a sales label as a complete material specification.
Virgin PP, PE, ABS, PC, polyamides, polyesters and other materials may be selected where a productneedsspecifiedmechanicalproperties, consistentcolor, controlledprocessingbehavioror particularqualificationdocumentation.Thechoicedependsontheproduct.Amedicalcomponent, food package, automotive part and general industrial molding can have different requirements.
Recycled material may replace part or all of the virgin input where it meets the technical and applicationrequirements.Thatdecisionneedstestingattheproposedformulationandproduction conditions. A recycled grade that performs well in a noncritical housing does not automatically qualify for a different component.
Food-contact applications require specific attention. FDA guidance discusses source controls, potential contaminants and evaluation of recycling processes for food packaging. A visually clean production scrap or recycled pellet should not be advertised as suitable for food contact solely because it looks clean. [21]
M. Holland’s recycled resin offering illustrates how distributors participate in this market. Manufacturers can evaluate purchased recycled grades alongside virgin materials and their own regrind. However, theexistenceofadistributor’sportfoliodoesnotestablishthevirginorrecycled percentage used by any specific customer. [8]
Offgraderesinandfloorsweepingsneedseparatedescriptions
Off-grade pellets can come from original resin production and may not be recycled material. Their off-specificationpropertyandavailabletestdatashouldbedisclosed.Surplusprimeresin,off-grade pellets, industrial regrind and floor sweepings should therefore be listed as different products.
Floor sweepings require particular attention to metal, dust, other polymers and other contamination.Callingaload”PPgranules”withoutexplainingthatitwasrecoveredfromthefloor leaves out information the buyer needs to evaluate the lot.
What determines the value of plastic scrap in Illinois
The recoverable value depends on the buyer’s intended use. Polymer identity, grade consistency, color, contamination, availablevolumeandfreightcanallchangetheresult.Arecurringsupplywith predictablepropertiesallowsabuyertoplanproduction, whileanisolatedmixedloadmayrequire more testing and sorting.
The same polymer can have different values in different forms. A buyer may prefer sorted regrind, wholerejectedparts, baledfilmorunusedrollsdependingonitsequipment.Grindingbeforesaleis useful only when the added value exceeds the processing cost and the operation preserves material identity.
Compare quotations on the same basis. A price at the seller’s dock cannot be compared directly withadeliveredpricethatincludesfreight.Theagreementshouldexplainnetweight, moistureor contamination deductions, packaging costs, sampling, payment timing and the procedure for a rejected load.

Thermoplastics cured rubber and composites need different routes
Thermoplastics such as PP and PE can often be evaluated for mechanical recycling through size reduction, melt processing and subsequent manufacturing. Suitability still depends on contamination,formulationandend-productrequirements.Filledgrades,coatingsandmultilayer structures require their own assessment.

How to describe achievements without overstating recycling
Factorysize,presscount,customer-defectrate,recycledcontentandlandfilldiversionaredifferent performancemeasures.Acustomer-defectfiguredescribeswhatreachesthecustomer;itisnotthe weight of manufacturing scrap. A recycled-content percentage describes a product or formulation; it is not necessarily the percentage of the factory’s own waste recycled.
Similarly, an expansion announcement is evidence of investment and capability, not proof that futureoutputoremploymenthasalreadybeenachieved.Amachine’stheoreticalcapacityisnotits annualutilization.Acompany-widerecyclingtotalshouldretainitsreportingperiod,geographyand included material types.
For WasteMarkt listings and factory profiles, useful achievements include a dated equipment investment, a disclosed product capability, an identifiable material-recovery program or a clearly scopedcertification.Keepeachclaimattachedtothecompanyorfacilitythatmadeit, andretain any qualification in the source.
Thesupplieddirectoryscreenshotsareusefulforidentifyingcompanynames, buttheiremployee bands are not treated here as audited staffing counts. In particular, a group-wide estimate, an office profile and a plant headcount should not be used interchangeably. No factory’s monthly waste is calculated from a directory employment band.
Using WasteMarkt for materials products services and jobs
A manufacturer can prepare separate descriptions for the material it sells and the product it manufactures. A profile might explain its production capability, while a material offer states a particularpolymer, form, weight, locationandcollectionfrequency.Thishelpsabuyerdistinguisha finished plastic product from production scrap.
Foraserviceinquiry, definethephysicaltask:cuttingoversizedHDPEpipe, grindingidentified rejects, compacting suitable EPS, toll pelletizing or arranging transport. Confirm material acceptance, size limits and the expected output before agreeing the job. A service provider’s willingness to quote does not establish that every offered material is suitable for the process.
Forrecruitment, ausefuljobdescriptionstatestheactualworklocation, process, shift, equipment experience and responsibilities. A molding technician role should explain whether the work concernssmallprecisionparts, largestructuralcomponents, insertmoldingoranotherprocess.A recycling role should identify the relevant line and handling tasks. This gives job candidates information that a generic ‘factory worker’ title cannot provide.
Factories, processors and buyers can use WasteMarkt.com to make their material requirements visible.Detailedproductandprocessinformationgivespotentialpartnersabasisforqualification, while accurate job and service descriptions connect the wider industrial supply chain.
